San Diego Figure Skating Club’s Special Athletes represent the club at several competitions a year. They are a group of special needs athletes who practice at the San Diego Ice Arena every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 – 5:00 pm and on weekends at the UTC rink in La Jolla and also at Ice-O-Plex in Escondido. The skaters are coached by junior members of the San Diego Figure Skating Club including Christine Poletto, Nicole Poletto, Kristen Wilcox, Kerrie Wilcox, Brett Ryan, Oliver Asbury and Sarah Hervey. The Special Skaters compete annually in our own Skate La Grande Competition as well as the Cactus Classic in Arizona and the Silver State Open Championships in Las Vegas. The athletes travel with their coaches who have the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities with the athletes in addition to working with them on their training regimen. The hours before a competition are always extremely busy getting everyone’s hair and make-up just so. The skaters also compete in various competitions sponsored by Sports for Exceptional Athletes and Special Olympics. They participate in an annual competition in Lake Arrowhead which is a much anticipated event by both the athletes and the coaches. The Special Skaters hold a “Family Night Out” fundraiser once a month, usually at Pat & Oscar’s in Mira Mesa, to raise money for travel to the competitions. Please watch the SDFSC website for informational flyers. It’s a great way to support the Special Skaters and have a fun, social evening out. The restaurant donates 20% of your order to the Special Athletes. Being involved with the Special Skater program is an incredibly rewarding and fun experience. If you are interested in volunteering as a coach or in any other capacity, please contact one of the committee chairs for Special Skaters of the San Diego Figure Skating Club, Terry Poletto at tpoletto@san.rr.com or Marianne Tyler at tylerclan@Juno.com.
