About Us

Who are we?

We are a US Figure Skating club with over 250 members who call sunny San Diego, California our home. Our home ice surface is the San Diego Ice Arena located in the community of Mira Mesa. Our satellite ice surface is the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center located in the college area of San Diego.

When did we start?

The San Diego Figure Skating Club was incorporated in the State of California on July 27, 1940 as a non-profit corporation, and was formed "To foster, promote, encourage, advance and improve the art of and interest in ice skating; and to encourage and to cultivate a spirit of harmony and friendship among ice skaters by such means as may be proposed from time to time by our membership;" (Articles of Incorporation). We are also tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which means any donations made to the club are tax deductible.

The Club currently has over 250 members, and due to our strong synchronized team skating program, there is a relatively even division of skating interest between singles, pairs, dance, synchronized team and Special Olympics. We currently have 10 US Figure Skating Judges as members, two of whom are National Judges, who have appointments to judge Singles & Pairs, Dance, and Synchronized Team. We also have a National Referee, two Sectional Accountants, and a Regional Music Coordinator. In addition, we have club members serving on three of the USFSA’s permanent committees

Our Skaters

We have many competitive skaters in our club, who compete in Ladies Singles, Men's Singles, Pairs, and Dance at various levels. We have a very rich mix of skaters and are very proud of their accomplishments. We are very privileged to be home to 12 Special Olympians.

We are home to the most successful synchronized team skating program in the Pacific Coast Section. Team del Sol competes in three divisions: Senior, Novice, and Intermediate. Under the direction of Coach Karen Weismeier, these teams consistently rank at the top of their respective divisions at the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, and have medalled at the National Championships, and represented the United States at International competitions.

In addition to USFSA qualifying competitions, each spring we host our open competition Skate La Grandé San Diego, which draws over 300 competitors from throughout the Western United States, Canada and Mexico.

In 2004, we were delighted to host US Figure Skating's annual Governing Council at the Sheraton Harbor Island located on beautiful San Diego Bay.

Helping Our Skaters

Following the 1981 U.S. National Championships, the Club established the Founders Fund using the profits from Nationals. The purpose of the Founders Fund is to raise funds and distribute them to club members by means of grants for skating related activities. Since its inception, grants have been given every year to those skaters who qualify and compete at the Sectional or National level (both single skaters and precision team members). The fund has also made grants to the judges in our club to attend USFSA required judges schools. Our Program Development Committee is chartered with providing skating development programs for our skaters. The committee initialized our annual Moves in the Field Seminar, a 10 week course taught every summer, as well as hosted several other seminars including Dance, Introduction to Judging, and Understand the USFSA Scoring System. The committee is continuously evaluating new programs.The Club provides an annual Scholastic Achievement Award, which is given to the skater who excels on the ice and in the classroom. Scholarships are awarded at three academic levels, Junior High School, High School and Collegiate.

Our latest effort to help our skaters is the formation of a Competitive Skater Fund. This fund seeks to provide annual grants to our Singles, Pairs and Dance Skaters who go to Regionals, Sectionals, Nationals and International competitions. Funding is provided by donations and fundraising events such as raffles, restaurant profit share, scrip, and other programs. Grants are paid annually after the conclusion of Southwest Pacific Regional Championships.
